3 Tips To Look Stunning During Your Next Portrait Session

Updated: Nov 16, 2021

We've all seen those images, you know, the ones on the cover of magazines that make you go WOW, I want to be like them! Well, who says we can't? Let's talk about a few things you can do before your next shoot to make you look and feel your best. These simple tips will hopefully help your personality shine during your next photo session. Let's create that WOW moment for yourself!

1) Wear Happy Clothes

Ok so this one can be a little tricky, but let me explain. Your clothing should be an extension of you and your personality. Are you a bright and bubbly person? Then a shorter, bright-colored dress will help convey that. More of a simple and elegant bride? Why not try something a little more on the formal side, maybe a floor-length dress or even a jumper. Either way, you lean, let's talk about the design of your outfit. Its been proven that solid-colored outfits help draw the viewer's eyes to the subject, instead of fighting for the limelight. A perfect example of this, your wedding dress. A solid white dress. (Yes I know sometimes there are exceptions, but for the most part, white.) What do most people say when they talk about the first time they see a bride in her complete wedding attire? You look gorgeous! YOU. This is usually followed by, And that dress looks amazing! Because even though the dress is a beauty, it is not distracting you from the main subject, the bride. So let's use that same methodology for all of your portraits! Let's focus on finding outfits that you feel comfortable in and help portray your personality, while also focusing on solid colors to ensure you are the center of attention.

2) Hair & Makeup

Yes, I know, It's your big and you have a vision. And in that vision, you may have a certain look you're going for. Hey look, I've been there, I get it. BUT, hear me out, don't go to the extreme. One day you are going to be looking back at your wedding photos/videos, possibly showing your kids or even grandkids, so let's make sure the people in those portraits are an accurate representation of you. These portraits will hopefully be something you treasure for many years to come, and the last thing you want to look back at and remember is gonna be a bad hair or makeup decision you made. I highly recommend that you hold off on trying a drastically new hairstyle, color, and even a new hairstylist right before your portraits. People want to look back and remember you the way you are, so let's give them that with just a little extra on top. I've seen and heard too many horror stories of brides trying something too drastic before their portraits only to be left saying, I don't know why I decided to do that, I've never done that in my life and ill never do that again! Let's stick to what we know works best for us and just build on that for our portraits instead of trying to refine ourselves for one photoshoot.

Bonus tip for the guys - Let's get that haircut about a week or so before your wedding day. This will help fade that new haircut look and get you looking more like yourself as well!

3) Just Be Yourself

Yeah yeah, I know exactly what you're gonna say, But I'm just so awkward in front of a camera. Trust me, same! But there's a reason why everyone tells you this, it's because it works. Once you let go of that initial fear of being in front of a camera, that's when we're able to truly capture you and your relationship with one another. Now you're not in this alone, I will also be there to guide you through it, but before you get to your shoot try and figure out what makes you feel comfortable around each other. This may be as simple as holding hands, or maybe even when you're cuddled up together. The only one that can answer that is you. So the next time a photographer tells you to just be yourself, don't be afraid to abandon the pose they might have tried to put you in and just have your partner wrap their arms around you. If you feel happy, you'll look happy.
